Op zondagmorgen 15 mei 2011 nam pastoraal werker Jan Vogels in de gezegende leeftijd van 65 jaar afscheid van de parochie Heilige Damiaan de Veuster. De afscheidsviering werd gehouden in de St. Trudokerk te Stiphout.
Het thema van deze viering was: Pelgrims zijn wij mensen.
Dat is erg toepasselijk, het zegt iets over de theologie van Jan, die graag net als zijn Heer naast de mensen wil staan, als volk onderweg in de geest van het Tweede Vaticaanse Concilie.
Het was een dienst met veel celebranten waaronder deken J. van de Laar; Jo van Kessel en Hans van den Heuvel, de pastors van de St. Trudo.
De tweede reden van het thema is gelegen in het feit dat Jan Vogels binnenkort zal beginnen aan een pelgrimage naar Santiago de Compostella in Noord-West Spanje. Ook hij gaat de schelp van Jacobus bemachtigen, maar dat is niet het hoofddoel blijkens onderstaand gedicht dat in de viering werd voorgelezen.

Vanuit de vorige parochie Brouwhuis/Rijpelberg waar Jan eerder samen met wijlen pastor Daan Balk gediend heeft waren o.a. aanwezig bij genoemde afscheidsdienst de familie J. Drissen; de heer en mevrouw van Loon-de Kort en Lodewijk en Anne Cathrien den Breejen.
Na afloop van de viering volgde er een receptie en kreeg Jan voor de ingang van kerk een vendelgroet van het Gilde en een aubade van Fanfare De Vooruitgang uit Stiphout.
