VA - Wild And Excellent Intro's

Prachtige intro's vol van rockabilly waaronder Minor Chaos van The Treasures; The Teenbeats met Nightspot en The Challengers met Deadline zijn hier onder vele anderen te beluisteren. Bij rockabilly werd ik weer eens bepaald door het eindlijstje van een goede bekende van mij, namelijk journalist Hans Vermeeren van het Eindhovens Dagblad.

Zijn lijstje ziet er als volgt uit.

1. Twilight Hotel - When The Wolves Go Blind Tip van de maand! Een prachtig folkalbum van het duo Brandy Zdan & Dave Quanburry . Ze worden wel vergeleken met Johnny Cash en June Carter en verder met Buddy & Julie Miller maar dat is zoals bekend altijd een riskante onderneming! Ooit vergeleek ik Pete Molinari met Bob Dylan wat nogal wat commentaar opleverde! Daarnaast wordt ook wel de vergelijking getrokken met de muziek van Calexico, en dat is dus weer andere verrukkelijke koek! Mijn favoriete songs naast de titelsong zijn: What Di I Know About Love?; The Master; Dream Of Letting Go; Golden Eagle; When I'm Gone en tenslotte het rockabillynummer Ham Radio Blues. De eerdere albums Bethune (2006) en Highway Prayer (2008) mogen er overigens ook zijn.

NIEUW

1. Decemberists ft. Peter Buck (REM) & Gillian Welch - The King Is Dead Een dijk van een jaaropener dit album met 10 ijzersterke songs waar de volgende songs extra afsteken: January Hymn; Calamity Song en June Hymn (ook dan gaan ze er vol vertrouwen vanuit dat we dit album nog beluisteren). Dit album komt 12 januari 2011 uit!
   
2. Nemesea - Believe
   Via Hyves kwam ik dit nieuwe album op het spoor. Meer nieuws op www.nemesea.com.
3. Thomas Hampson & Wiener Virtuosen - Des Knaben Wunderhorn (Mahler)
   Via www.deutschegrammophon.com zijn fragmenten te beluisteren van deze prachtige opname van 21.12.2010 maar in januari 2011 pas uitkomt.
4. Vienna Philharmoniker o.l.v. Franz Welser- Most - The New Year's Celebration 2011
   Welser- Most is normaal de dirigent van de Cleveland Symphony. De werken die ze uitvoeren zijn o.a. On The Beautiful Blue Danube; Six Concert Premieres For The Night en niet echt verrassend de Radetsky Mars!
5. Steel Magnolia - Steel Magnolia
   Volgens de ene bron komt het hoog aangeprezen debuutalbum van dit duo in januari uit, andere bronnen hebben het over november. Hoe dan ook het komt er en het is een mooie aanwinst in het nieuwe jaar! Overleden
6. Pete Quaife
   Op 24 juni 2010 is bassist en medeoprichter van The Kinks Pete Quaife overleden. Geboren op 31 december 1943, 66 jaar oud. Dat was mij helemaal ontgaan maar door een recensie in Trouw van een optreden van Ray Davies in Carré kwam dit alsnog aan het licht. Oude kranten lezen brengt soms tóch nog nieuws, naar de achtergronden. In 1969 heeft hij The Kinks verlaten en begon met de countryrockband Maple Oak, dit werd geen succes waarop hij de muziekscene verliet. In de jaren 80 was hij verhuisd naar Canada en werd er grafisch kunstenaar. Sinds 1998 kreeg hij nierdialyse, de exacte doodsoorzaak is niet bekend. Ray Davies zong als in memorial voor Pete de prachtige song Days.
